Procurement and Operationalization of Innovation and New Technology

The POINT pilot is being tested on select IDEaS contract-based challenges to help streamline the acquisition of innovations that have successfully completed IDEaS funding. At Canada’s discretion, promising innovations may be awarded a contract for the acquisition of their solution at scale for operational use by the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (DND/CAF).

  • POINT will help deliver key benefits, including:
    • Allowing IDEaS-funded technologies to move from research and development (R&D) to meeting an operational need for the Canadian Armed Forces.
    • Simplifying the procurement process both for innovators and the Defence Team.
    • Ensuring a competitive process overseen by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC).

How it works
  • POINT Calls for Proposal will specify the criteria and funding available for IDEaS contract-based Research and Development (R&D) and for the potential acquisition of the resulting innovation. Each challenge may have a specific minimum Technology Readiness Level (TRL) requirement at entry.
  • After any applicable R&D has been completed, a test of the technology will occur, and if the technology meets the acquisition criteria, DND/CAF will have the option to buy the innovation at scale for operational use.
  • It is important to note that receiving R&D funding through the POINT pilot does not guarantee an acquisition contract. The acquisition is an option that may be exercised by the Government of Canada at its discretion.
