Key Information on Restorative Engagement
This program uses a restorative approach.
Restorative Engagement is built on the philosophy of restorative justice:
- Wrongdoing causes harm
- Those who cause harm have a responsibility to repair that harm
- Those who have been harmed are central in deciding what is needed to repair it
- Communities have a role to play in supporting those involved and addressing the root causes of the wrongdoing
Your Restorative Engagement process will not be with the person or people who harmed you directly.
The Restorative Engagement program does not facilitate communication between individuals harmed and those who harmed them directly. Instead, it involves representatives of the institution in which the harm occurred.
Restorative Engagement is confidential.
Participation in, and information shared within the Restorative Engagement program will be confidential within legal limitations.
If you choose to share a record of your experience for the purpose of informing culture change, you may do so anonymously. This ‘record’ can take many different forms and will only be submitted with your consent.
All personal information will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Act.
Duty to report can be avoided.
If you are concerned about the military duty to report, you will be provided with options for participation that would avoid activating that duty.
Participation in Restorative Engagement will not impact any investigation.
The Restorative Engagement program is outside the CAF reporting and investigation process. Participation in the program is not part of any administrative, disciplinary or criminal process.
Participation in Restorative Engagement does not affect your claim for financial compensation.
Participation in, and information shared within the Restorative Engagement program will have no impact on your claim for financial compensation. Participation is on a voluntary basis only, and you are also free to change your mind at any step.
You can choose to only take part in the Restorative Engagement Program.
You do not have to apply for compensation to take part in the Restorative Engagement program. You do have to submit a claim form within the claims period, but you can request Restorative Engagement only.
