Timely, comprehensive and reliable public notification of drug shortages and discontinuances provides the healthcare system with the time and information needed to minimise disruptions on drug supply and patient care. The Public Notification Register is intended to be an interim measure to enhance industry accountability and transparency for the voluntary public notification of shortages on the industry-run Canadian Drug Shortage Website while mandatory drug shortage reporting regulations are put into place. Public Notification Register
Health Canada has asked all companies in Canada authorized to sell human pharmaceutical or biologic drug products (Drug Identification Number owners) to make a commitment to public notification of drug shortages and discontinuances on the industry-run Canadian Drug Shortage Website. Company commitments are made public on the Public Notification Register.
The scope of the Public Notification Register is limited to disruptions of human drugs and does not apply to veterinary drugs. It is not the focus of the Public Notification Register to address supply disruptions of consumer health products, personal-care products, cosmetic-like drugs, toiletries or disinfectants.
For those suppliers that have not yet provided their commitment to notification on the Canadian Drug Shortage Website, they are encouraged to send confirmation of their commitment in an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. Once processed, Health Canada will add their company's name to the Register.
