After you apply
The Canada Post labour disruption will cause delays in mail delivery
We’re still processing applications normally. However, there will be delays in
- sending applications mailed within or to Canada
- getting mail from us
We encourage you to apply online if possible. If you need to apply on paper, use another courier to send us your application.
Your fingerprints and photo (biometrics)
Book your biometrics collection appointment as soon as you can to avoid processing delays. Find out how to give biometrics.
If your application is approved
You should get your visitor record in the mail within 6 weeks of getting your decision letter. If you don’t, contact us.
If your status expires
If you apply to extend your stay in Canada before the date by which you’re supposed to leave, you can legally stay in Canada until a decision is made on your application. In this situation, you have maintained your status.
Temporary resident permit applicants do not benefit from maintained status
Temporary resident permit (TRP) applicants can’t maintain temporary resident status while their application is being processed. This applies to both
- initial TRP applications, and
- any other TRP applications
