Overpayments on your public service pay

Receiving a notice of overpayment

Depending on the amount you are overpaid, you may receive an overpayment notice.

If you have received an overpayment notice you will need to acknowledge the overpayment and decide on the repayment options that are best suited for you before the deadline identified on the notice.

See Recovery from first available funds for instances where you will not receive an overpayment notice.

Less than 10% of your gross bi-weekly pay

If your overpayment is less than 10% of your gross bi-weekly pay, you will receive a notice that your upcoming pay cheque will have a reduced amount unless it is a type of overpayment included in the Recovery from first available funds. Once your overpayment has been processed, it will be recovered from your first available funds on your next pay.

More than 10% of your gross bi-weekly pay

If your overpayment is more than 10% of your gross bi-weekly pay, you will receive an overpayment notice. The notice will come from the Public Service Pay Centre or from your departmental compensation unit (if your department or agency is not served by the Pay Centre).

The notice provides details of the overpayment and options for you to repay it.

Do not send any payment until you have been notified to do so.

You haven’t received a notice of overpayment

You will not always receive a notice of overpayment before money is recovered from your paycheque; see Recovery from first available funds. Should you have any questions about unacknowledged overpayments and recovery, you can contact the Pay and Benefits Client Contact Centre.

If your department is not served by the Pay Centre, you are encouraged to contact your departmental compensation unit to ensure your request is actioned according to departmental procedures.
