The interim Canada Dental Benefit can provide an additional payment for some children who had dental costs that were more than $650 in one of the benefit periods. You would only meet the criteria for the additional payment if you are not applying for both benefit periods for that child. If you are eligible, your additional payment will be the same amount as your original dental benefit payment.

Criteria for the additional payment

Check if you can get an additional payment for your child's dental care for either the first or second benefit period.

First benefit period: October 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023

You may be eligible for an additional payment if:

You need all of the above to be eligible

You must meet all of the above criteria to be eligible for the additional payment for the first benefit period.

Second benefit period: July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024

You may be eligible for an additional payment if:

  • If you were new to Canada

If you were not a resident of Canada in 2021, you may not have been able to file a Canadian tax return for that year.

You met the 2021 tax filing criteria if you submitted a statement of income for 2021 when you applied for the CCB.

If you had a spouse or common-law partner in the same situation, they also needed to submit a statement of income to have met the tax filing criteria.

  • How your adjusted family net income is calculated

The CRA calculates your adjusted family net income (AFNI) based on your 2021 tax return. If you had a spouse or common-law partner, their 2021 tax information will be included in the calculation.

You do not need to calculate this number. If your AFNI was less than $90,000 in 2021, you should see the option to apply in your CRA My Account.

If you want to estimate your AFNI

For this benefit only, include your spouse or common-law partner's amounts if you were married or living common-law on December 1, 2022.

Steps to calculate your 2021 AFNI
    • Your 2021 net income (line 23600)
    • Your spouse or common-law partner's 2021 net income (line 23600)
    • Your 2021 world income (if applicable)

    • Your 2021 family net income
    • Your 2021 family net income
    • 2021 RDSP and UCCB payments to you or your spouse or common-law partner (line 11700 and line 12500)
    • 2021 RDSP and UCCB repayments from you or your spouse or common-law partner (line 21300 and line 23200)

    • Your 2021 adjusted family net income (AFNI)

You need all of the above to be eligible

You must meet all of the above criteria to be eligible for the additional payment for the second benefit period.
