Stefany: Hello! My name is Stefany. I’ll be showing you how to use the Auto-fill my return service as a CVITP volunteer.

Throughout the presentation, I’ll refer to the service as AFR.

Image on screen: Title: Three step AFR process. Left aligned, three oval buttons, orange, green and blue, appear on screen with text: Step 1, Step 2, Step 3. Animation of flying paper plane, horizontal arrow pointing to a safe, and vertical arrow pointing to a tray appears on screen beside text.

Stefany: In the video “Introduction to the AFR service,” you learned that there are three steps in the AFR process:

In this video, I’ll introduce you to the process of submitting the authorization request in the UFile CVITP software.

Image on screen: Title: Before you start using AFR. Animation of X in a circle, horizontal arrow pointing into a semi-circle, clock with moving minute hand appears on screen beside text.

Stefany: Before you start the AFR process, it’s important:

Stefany: Let’s get started on the first step in the AFR process, submitting an authorization request.

For the purpose of this demonstration, I’ll use the 2021 version of the UFile CVITP software [quick animation of digits 2, 0, 2, 1 moving up and down sequentially].

Stefany: Software versions may vary slightly from year to year.

However, these instructions will work for software back to 2018 and for parts of 2017.

Let’s start on a new tax file [rectangular callout surrounds the Start button and pointer clicks on it].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Family Head Identification screen

Stefany: This will open a profile for the Family Head [rectangular callout surrounds the Family head tab]. The Family Head is the first person entered into UFile. If applicable, other family members are then added to the tax file.

Now, let’s proceed through the second tab, Interview [rectangular callout surrounds the Interview tab]. Complete these sections in the left side panel:

The Spouse interview type section only shows if you choose one of these options from the Marital status drop-down menu [pointer clicks on the marital status drop-down menu and rectangular callout surrounds the options]:

Next, fill out the current address section [rectangular callout surrounds the section and the pointer clicks on it].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Mailing address and residence information screen

Stefany: Then, answer the CRA questions [rectangular callout surrounds the section and pointer clicks on it].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) questions screen

Stefany: If applicable, you must add the spouse’s information before submitting an Authorization request for the Family Head.

Click on add spouse in the sub-tab at the top [rectangular callout surrounds the sub-tab and pointer clicks on it].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Spouse identification screen

Stefany: This creates a new tab for the spouse’s profile.

If you’re also using AFR to file the spouse’s return, you must also submit an Authorization request for them.

To simplify things, the individual in our example won’t have a spouse.

So, let’s delete the spouse profile by clicking Delete selected in the top menu [rectangular callout surrounds the sub-tab and the pointer clicks on it].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, pop-up window and pointer clicks OK

Stefany: Click OK when the pop-up window asks Are you sure you want to delete this family member?

Stefany: Now, adjust the individual’s marital status by selecting Single from the Marital status drop-down menu [pointer clicks on the drop-down menu, rectangular callout surrounds Single and the pointer clicks on it].

Next, in the left side menu, select the EFILE section [rectangular callout surrounds the section and the pointer clicks on it].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Electronic filing - EFILE screen

Stefany: Answer Yes to the question Will you be using the CRA Auto-fill my return service for this taxpayer? [pointer clicks on Yes from the drop-down menu]

When you answer Yes, a new question will appear [rectangular callout surrounds the question].

It asks: Have you already filed an Authorization request successfully for this taxpayer today?

Only answer Yes if you started the process earlier today or are completing a prior year return for the same individual.

Note that even if you’re using AFR for a prior year, you have to submit the authorization request using the current year’s software.

Also, keep in mind, you have to submit an Authorization request for each person you file for using AFR.

Let’s answer No [pointer clicks on No from the drop-down menu].

Once you’ve answered no, you will see instructions [zoom in to rectangular callout surrounding the instructions and the rest of the page is blurred].

Read the instructions [zoom out on instructions and clear EFILE screen appears back on screen. Pointer scrolls down on page].

Next, answer the question Will you be using EFILE to submit a prior year federal return, today or within the next two days?

For our example, select No [pointer clicks on No].

Next, click on the Tax Return tab at the top [rectangular callout surrounds the tab and the pointer clicks on it].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Tax return cover page screen

Stefany: From the left side menu, select CRA Authorization request [rectangular callout surrounds the section and the pointer clicks on it] to generate the Authorization request – signature page.

Stefany: The Authorization request – signature page will have [zoom in to signature page]:

[Zoom out on signature page] If you’re participating in an in-person clinic, print the Authorization request – signature page by selecting print at the bottom of the screen [rectangular callout surrounds the button].

Next, read the Auto-fill my return script to the individual. You can find it online on the CVITP learning guide web pages. It explains what they are consenting to by signing the document.

Lastly, ask them to sign the printed form.

The individual then keeps a paper copy of this form. Volunteers and organizations don’t keep copies.

If you’re volunteering in virtual clinics, refer to the guidelines and resources available to help you with this step.

Next, click the EFILE tab at the top [pointer clicks on the tab].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Filing status screen

Stefany: In the left side menu, you can either click Federal Authorization submission on the left [rectangular callout surrounds the section], or click Ready for filing, next to Federal authorization [rectangular callout surrounds the button].

Both will bring you to the same page and the next step in the process [pointer clicks on Federal Authorization submission].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Federal Authorization e-submission screen

Stefany: Now, let’s click on the link for Authorization Terms and Conditions for CVITP [pointer clicks on the link].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Authorizing or Cancelling a Representative Terms and Conditions for CVITP window opens on screen.

Stefany: A UFile help window will pop up with the Authorizing or Cancelling a Representative Terms and Conditions for CVITP.

These are the same Terms and Conditions you saw earlier in the video “Introduction to Auto-fill my return service.”

Read the terms and conditions, and then click the Close button [pointer clicks the button].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Federal Authorization e-submission screen

Stefany: Now, check the box I agree with the Authorization Terms and Conditions for CVITP [pointer checks the box].

Note that if you do not agree with the terms and conditions, you cannot continue the AFR process.

Next, click on the button File the Authorization now! [pointer clicks the button].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Federal EFILE Report window appears on screen.

Stefany: UFile will generate a federal EFILE report with a confirmation number [rectangular callout surrounds the confirmation number].

This means the authorization was filed successfully. Congratulations!

Click on Close [pointer clicks on the Close button].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Federal Authorization e-submission screen

Stefany: This brings you back to the EFILE tab within UFile.

Image on screen: Right aligned, a grey box including the CVITP dedicated helpline information and a phone icon slide up on screen. Animation of radio waves emitting from the phone icon.

Stefany: You can also contact the dedicated help line for volunteers if you:

Note that this toll-free number is only for volunteers. Don’t share it with anyone outside the program.
