Stefany: Hello! My name is Stefany. This is the second part of our demonstration on how to use the Auto-fill my return service as a CVITP volunteer.

Throughout the presentation, I’ll refer to the service as AFR.

Image on screen: Title: Three step AFR process. Left aligned oval orange button with text: Step 1 and animation of flying paper plane beside text appear on screen. Next, green and blue oval buttons with text: Step 2 and Step 3 along with horizontal arrow pointing to a safe and vertical arrow pointing to a tray beside text appear on screen.

Stefany: In part 1, we went over submitting the authorization request.

In this demonstration, I’ll introduce you to steps 2 and 3 – logging in to the tax information web services page, and downloading information into UFile.

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Federal Authorization e-submission screen

Stefany: Let’s start where we left our last demonstration – the EFILE tab within UFile [rectangular callout surrounds the EFILE tab]. We got here after successfully submitting an authorization request to the CRA [rectangular callout surrounds Federal Authorization submission in left-hand menu].

If you need to prepare a tax return for a prior year, don’t select the link that says “click here to proceed with CRA Auto-fill my return” [animation of red X crossing the phrase].

Instead, minimize the software for the current year and complete the returns for the prior years, starting with the oldest.

To do returns for previous years, you need the versions of the UFile CVITP software for those years installed on your computer.

If you’re preparing a tax return for the current year, select the link that says “click here to proceed with CRA Auto-fill my return” [rectangular callout surrounds the phrase].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, CRA Auto-fill my return screen

Stefany: Once you click the link, you will be brought to the CRA Auto-fill my return section of the Interview tab [rectangular callout surrounds phrase in left-hand menu].

Check the box Yes, Use Auto-fill my return in this file [rectangular callout surrounds the phrase and pointer clicks on the checkbox].

And then, click Next [cursor clicks on Next].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Download my information screen

Stefany: This brings you to the Download my information page [rectangular callout surrounds the phrase and pointer clicks on button].

Here, you’ll read the AFR terms and conditions of use [rectangular callout surrounds the text].

Assuming you agree, check the box indicating “I have read the terms and conditions above and agree to retrieve my tax information” [rectangular callout surrounds the phrase and pointer clicks on the checkbox].

Then, select Download [rectangular callout surrounds the Download button and pointer clicks on it].

Remember to close all web browsers before attempting to download the data.

Image on screen: CRA, Tax information web service page

Stefany: The web browser will open the CRA's Tax information web service page.

Here, validate your identity to access the AFR application.

You can log in using your online banking credentials [rectangular callout surrounds Option 1 – Using one of our Sign-In Partners section].

Using your banking credentials won’t compromise your personal information. The credentials are used to validate your identity to allow secure online access to Government of Canada services.

Or, you can log in using your CRA user ID and password [rectangular callout surrounds Option 2 – Using a CRA user ID or password section and pointer clicks on the CRA login button].

Image on screen: CRA, Sign in page

Stefany: Use the same sign-in information you normally use to access other CRA online services, such as My Account, Represent a Client, and My Business Account [rectangular callout surrounds the Sign in button and pointer clicks on it].

Image on screen: CRA, Additional security feature preference

Stefany: Answer the security question [animation of entering password].

Click Next [pointer clicks on button].

Image on screen: CRA sign in and security options page

Stefany: Once you’ve checked that the date and time of your last CRA sign in is correct, click Next [rectangular callout surrounds the button and pointer clicks on it].

Image on screen: CRA, Multi-factor authentication – telephone number and delivery method screen

Stefany: If you’re enrolled in multi-factor authentication, the last four digits in the cell or landline telephone number you provided will be displayed on screen.

Choose your preferred method to receive the one-time passcode. “Text Me” to receive a text to your phone. Or, choose “Call Me” to receive an automated voice message [rectangular callouts surround each button and pointer clicks on the Text Me button].

Image on screen: CRA, Multi-factor authentication – passcode entry screen

Stefany: Enter the one-time passcode received on your phone and click Next.

If you aren’t enrolled in multi-factor authentication, you will be prompted to enroll.

Image on screen: Tax information web service -request confirmation page

Stefany: Once logged in, you’re taken to the Tax information web service-request confirmation screen.

Here, you’ll need to verify the client’s SIN [rectangular callout surrounds the SIN box].

With the UFile CVITP software, you can only enter one SIN at a time.

Once you’ve seen the SIN is correct, click Next [pointer clicks on Next button].

Image on screen: Tax information web service – please wait screen

Stefany: The system may take a few minutes to process your request.

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Accept my information screen

Stefany: Next, you will see that Auto-fill my return has transferred information into the UFile software. This is the information that the CRA has on file for the individual.

Review the tax information in UFile with the taxpayer and confirm that it’s accurate [pointer scrolls down on page].

If it isn’t accurate, uncheck the applicable box.

Once you’ve verified that all of the information is accurate, click Accept [rectangular callout surrounds the Accept button and pointer clicks on it].

Some slips may require additional information. Be sure to follow the instructions and prompts provided by the software.

The software will bring you back to the Accept my information screen under the Interview tab.

Once this happens, you’ve completed the AFR service process! [rectangular callout surrounds the phrase: Congratulations, your dada has been successfully merged into your file].

The slips and other information that were downloaded are now listed in the left side menu [rectangular callout surrounds the section].

And, all of this information has been added to the individual’s tax return.

Keep in mind that AFR can only download information that the CRA has available at the time of filing.

Other income slips that have not yet been received by the CRA, or additional tax information not included on a slip, such as medical expenses and child care, still need to be entered in UFile, manually.

Enter this information as you would when preparing a tax return without using AFR.

Note that this toll-free number is only for volunteers. Don’t share it with anyone outside the program.
