Honneur de bataille attribué en reconnaissance des opérations menées au cours de la dernière semaine de la guerre. Cet honneur ne peut pas être perpétué par un régiment qui détient déjà les honneurs « Ypres, 1918 », « Courtrai », « Selle », « Valenciennes » ou « Sambre »Note de bas de page 1
Description
La prise de la ville belge de Mons le dernier jour de la guerre, soit le 11 novembre 1918, a eu une grande importance émotionnelle pour les personnes touchées par le conflit. En effet, Mons a été le lieu du premier engagement entre l’armée britannique et l’armée allemande sur le front occidental en août 1914. La retraite de Mons qui s’est ensuivie était une épopée dont on parlait encore au sein des armées de l’Empire britannique. Le fait que l’emplacement de cette bataille initiale soit repris par les Canadiens le dernier jour de la guerre a constitué une conclusion poignante et symbolique de la campagne sur le front occidental. Les unités ayant participé à la dernière partie de la campagne n’avaient pas toutes droit à un honneur particulier bien qu’elles aient toutes enduré les privations et subi les pertes que la vie active de soldat supposait. Afin de garantir que toutes reçoivent une certaine forme de reconnaissance, on a créé l’honneur « Poursuite vers Mons » dans le but de souligner la participation des unités qui n’avaient droit à aucune des autres distinctions susmentionnées.
Le lieutenant-général sir Arthur Currie, le major-général Frederick Loomis et d’autres officiers reçoivent le salut au cours du défilé sur la Grand-Place de Mons, en Belgique. 11 novembre 1918.
