Translation Bureau
The Translation Bureau is a federal institution within the Public Services and Procurement Canada portfolio. It supports the Government of Canada in its efforts to serve you and communicate with you in both official languages, Indigenous languages, foreign languages as well as sign languages. The Translation Bureau’s services are also available for private companies that have a contract with a federal department or agency.
Did you know that the Translation Bureau is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2024?
August 1, 1934, marked the beginning of the great adventure of the Translation Bureau, which was called the Bureau for Translations until the early 1980s. Translation, interpretation and terminology services have come a long way since!
With the initial mandate of addressing the need for equity between Anglophones and Francophones in terms of access to information, the Translation Bureau has played a crucial role in a variety of events, such as political debates, the Olympic Games, the G7 and G20 summits, media briefings during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pope’s visit in 2022 and a host of other occasions when the language professions have been called upon.
