Step 1: Sign in to your account

You must be outside Canada when you apply for a super visa.

You can use the IRCC Portal to apply for a super visa.

You may be able to use the IRCC Portal – New version if you:

  • are 18 years of age or older
  • are applying alone
  • have never applied for anything with us before
  • are not using a representative (including family or friends applying for you)

Requesting a paper, braille, or large format application

You must apply online. However, you can request an alternate format application if either

  • you can’t apply online, including for reasons of a disability, or
  • you’re travelling with an identity or travel document that was issued to a refugee, a stateless person or a non-citizen

How to request an alternative format

  1. Open a new email
  2. In the subject line of your email, include
    • the format you need (printed, braille, or large print), and
    • the application package you want
  3. In the body of your email, include
    • your full name as shown on your passport
    • a statement explaining that you’re asking for an alternate format
    • if you want the application in English or French
    • how we should send it to you (by email or regular mail)
      • Include your email address if you want us to send it electronically so you can print it yourself. This option will save you the time it would take to mail it to you.
      • Include your mailing address if you want it mailed to you.

After we get your request, we’ll send you the requested information and tell you where to send your application.

You can only email us to request alternative format of applications. We won’t reply to emails about any other topics.

Step 2: Start the application process

You’ll be asked some questions after you sign into the Portal. Answer the following questions exactly as shown:

  • Select Visitor visa or super visa when asked “I want to apply for”
  • Select To visit my children or grandchildren for more than 6 months (super visa) when asked “Why do you need a visitor visa?”

Step 3: Upload your forms and documents

After you answer the questionnaire, you’ll get a personalized document checklist. You’ll need a scanner or camera to create electronic copies of your documents.

Step 4: Pay the fees

We’ll ask you to pay your fees at the end of your application. To pay your fees, you’ll need:

  • a valid email address,
  • access to a printer (you’ll need to print the receipt), and
  • a credit card, Debit MasterCard® or Visa® Debit card.

In most cases, your fees will include processing fees. If you need to give biometrics, pay the fee when you apply to avoid processing delays.

Visa-exempt applicants

You don’t need to pay the super visa application fee or the biometrics fee. If your super visa application is approved, you’ll be directed to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA), if you need one.

After you have your eTA, you’ll be provided with a letter that you will show to a border services officer upon arrival to Canada.

Step 5: Submit a complete application

Make sure your application is complete and submit it in either the

  • IRCC Portal, or
  • IRCC Portal – New version Only for eligible applicants

Step 6: Give your biometrics after you apply If applicable

Wait for your biometrics instructions letter (BIL), and then book your biometrics collection appointment as soon as you can to avoid processing delays.

We can’t issue you a super visa that’s valid for a period longer than your biometrics.
