How to pay the amount you owe
Pre-authorized debit (PAD) is a secure, online self-service payment option for individuals and businesses to pay their taxes and other amounts due. You set the payment amount and authorize the CRA to withdraw it from your Canadian chequing account on the date, or dates, you choose.
In CRA online secure services
Your selected first payment date must be at least 5 business days from the date you create your PAD agreement. See public holidays for a list of non-business days.
Create a pre-authorized debit (PAD) agreement in My Account or My Business Account
- Sign in to your account
- Select "Proceed to pay"
- Choose "Schedule a series of payments"
- Fill in the fields to set up your PAD agreement
- Review the details and click ‘Submit’
- A confirmation page will display (save and print option is available)
- CRA will also generate a Pre-authorized debit agreement confirmation letter
Note
- If your correspondence preferences are set to “Electronic mail” in My Account, you will receive an email notification and will be able to view your confirmation letter the next business day. If you do not sign up to receive electronic mail from the CRA, you will receive the confirmation letter by mail in 7 to 10 business days. For more information, go to Email notifications from the CRA – Individuals.
- In My Business Account, CRA transitioned to online mail as the default method of delivering most business correspondence. As a result, you will automatically receive your confirmation letter electronically the next business day. For more information, go to Online mail for business.
Pay on behalf of someone else
Only legal representatives for individuals can schedule payments in Represent a Client.
Business representatives are not able schedule pre-authorized debits for businesses they represent.
Create a pre-authorized debit agreement in GST/HST Netfile
Businesses can also use pre-authorized debit through GST/HST Netfile to pay a balance due.
Create a pre-authorized debit agreement using EFILE
- You can authorize your electronic filer to set up a PAD agreement on your behalf to make a one-time payment. When these agreements are set up by an electronic filer, they are for the current tax year only and can't be used for instalments or T2 returns.
- You will have to fill out and sign Part C of Form T185, Electronic Filing of a Pre-authorized Debit Agreement, to authorize your electronic filer to send a PAD agreement on your behalf. Both you and your electronic filer have to keep a copy of the signed form.
- The electronic filer uses certified EFILE software to send the PAD information to the CRA through a secure web service. Upon successful transmission, a confirmation number will be received within the software. Go to EFILE certified software for a complete list of software.
Manage your pre-authorized debit (PAD)
You can view existing or inactive PAD agreements at any time.

If you do not sign up to receive electronic mail from the CRA, you will receive the confirmation letter by mail in 7 to 10 business days. Processing time
Your selected first payment date must be at least 5 business days from the date you create your PAD agreement.
- Considered as paid: the same day as the payment is withdrawn but payments made after 6:00 pm, Eastern time, during the weekend, or on a statutory holiday will be processed the next business day.
- Updated in your CRA account up to 2 business days after the payment is received
Confirm a PAD payment you made
You can confirm if we received a payment.
If you are reviewing your bank or credit union account transactions, descriptions of PAD payments can vary. Typical codes for PAD payments made to the CRA may include one or a combination of the following:
- CRA TXD
- CANADA TXD
- CRA TXD/DIM
If your payment is still not showing after 5 business days, you can resolve a payment issue.
Pre-authorized payments through your bank or credit union
To make future-dated payments directly through your bank or credit union, contact your financial institution or pay by online banking.
Note: The CRA will not issue a confirmation letter if you schedule pre-authorized payments directly through your bank or credit union.
Discuss a payment arrangement
If you need to discuss a balance you can't pay in full or on time, or want to set up an arrangement to pay your debt over the phone, you can call us to make a payment arrangement.
Note: Setting up a payment arrangement by phone with a CRA agent or through the automated Tele Arrangement service does not start your payments. To start your payment arrangement, set up a PAD agreement or select a payment method that works for you and make your first payment towards your debt.
For options on how to make your payments, go to Make a payment.
