The relocation process - Conducting the house hunting trip or destination inspection trip and securing the replacement residence
What are your intentions at destination?
Will you rent, purchase, of build your next home? The choice of living accommodation you make at the new destination will dictate the steps you need to take. Start this process 30 - 45 days prior to your Change of Strength (COS) date.
Find the steps you need to follow for each option below.
Renting a property (includes military housing)
Reference: CFIRP - chapter 4
- The house hunting trip (HHT) and destination inspection trip (DIT) must be authorized by your losing unit. The HHT/DIT application form is available on your Member Secure Website (MSW)
- Renters may select a rental search assistant to help with finding a suitable rental property while on HHT
Step 1: Planning your HHT
- Upload the signed HHT/DIT authorization form to your MSW
- Ensure that your flights and rental car are booked with BGRS through HRG if travelling by commercial airline
- Book your hotel
- Request an advance of funds
Step 2: After the HHT is complete
If a residence has not been secured:
- If you have not already opted for an extended HHT, you may request an extension of four (4) additional days or consider alternate living arrangements. If so, extend hotels, rental car, and return flight. Refer to CFIRP - section 4.1.03
- After the extended HHT, if you have not secured a residence, you may proceed ahead of your family and/or effects which will allow additional time to secure a replacement residence. Refer to CFIRP - section 11.2 for time constraints and return trip to move your (D)HG&E (Doesn't apply to international moves – please speak with your BGRS agent)
If a residence has been secured:
- Upload your purchase agreement or rental agreement on the BGRS website
- Upload your HHT/DIT receipts and enter your claim
- Request an advance of funds for your travel to new location
- Download the movement form (DND 4443), fill it out and email it to the positional mailbox. BGRS can assist with the completion of this form if required
For OUTCAN moves
Reference: CFIRP - chapter 4 and section 12.1
- Ensure that both the gaining and losing unit Commanding Officers sign the HHT/DIT application form.
Note: There are special considerations when moving outside Canada such as furnished accommodation, air priority shipments, vehicles (free of liens) and weight limitations. Please read CFIRP - chapter 12 carefully and reach out to your BGRS agent where required.
Purchasing a replacement residence
Reference: CFIRP - chapter 4 and sections 8.1 and 8.3
- The house hunting trip (HHT) and destination inspection trip (DIT) must be authorized by your losing unit. The HHT/DIT application form is available on your Member Secure Website (MSW)
- Select a lawyer, real estate agent and home inspector
- Update your MSW using the Suppliers link on your Dashboard
- A list of Third Party Service Providers and approved rates may be found on the BGRS website via your MSW

- Book your hotel
- Request an advance of funds

It is highly recommended that you make your offer conditional upon a satisfactory home inspection. This report will allow you to make an informed decision to buy and protect you against unseen major defects later.
New home construction
Reference: CFIRP - chapter 4 and article 8.3.05
- The house hunting trip (HHT) and destination inspection trip (DIT) must be authorized by your losing unit. The HHT/DIT application form is available on your Member Secure Website (MSW)
- Your HHT or DIT entitlement will depend on whether or not you have already entered into a building contract
- Be aware that interim and storage costs may not be reimbursed depending upon construction delays
- Releasing members may opt to have the their household goods and effects (HG&E) placed in long term storage as per CFIRP - article 14.4.02

Return to previously owned residence

- If you are moving into your own residence, you are limited to a destination inspection trip (DIT)
- The DIT must be authorized by your losing unit. The house hunting trip (HHT)/DIT application form is available on your Member Secure Website (MSW)
Step 1: Planning your DIT
- Upload the signed HHT/DIT authorization form to your MSW
- Ensure that your flights and rental car are booked with BGRS through HRG if travelling by commercial airline
- Book your hotel
- Request an advance of funds
Step 2: After the DIT is complete
- Upload your HHT/DIT receipts and enter your claim
- Request an advance of funds for your travel to new location
- Download the movement form (DND 4443), fill it out and email it to the positional mailbox. BGRS can assist with the completion of this form if required
Proceeding in advance of (D)HG&E
Reference: CFIRP - section 11.2 for unaccompanied benefits and article 3.4.06
- Upon arrival, complete your travel claim via the Finances section of your MSW
Tips
- Don't forget to book the movement of your HG&E by completing the DND 4443 form
- Request an advance of funds for purchase costs to provide to your lawyer for the closing
