Medical device shortages: List of shortages and discontinuations
Not all reported medical device shortages are posted online. We only post actual or anticipated shortages when:
- they meet the definition of a medical device shortage and
- the manufacturer reporting the shortage does not have acceptable substitute options available for sale in Canada
An actual shortage means a manufacturer's current supply cannot meet current demand in Canada.
An anticipated shortage means a manufacturer's future supply may not meet projected demand in Canada.
An avoided shortage means an anticipated shortage that will no longer occur.
A shortage is resolved when:
- a manufacturer can once again meet current demand for the medical device and
- there are no anticipated shortages of the same medical device in the near future or
- an acceptable substitute option has been found
Not all reported medical device discontinuations are posted online. We only post medical device discontinuations when:
- the manufacturer of a device decides to discontinue the sale of the device in Canada and
- the discontinuation will lead to a shortage in Canada
A discontinued status appears when a manufacturer decides to discontinue the sale of a specified medical device in Canada and it will lead to a shortage.
A to be discontinued status appears when a manufacturer is planning to discontinue the sale of a specified medical device in Canada and it will lead to a shortage.
Each device on this list is linked to a detailed report, which contains information such as impacted device identifiers and reason for shortage or discontinuation.
