Make sure you enter your passport information correctly

Before you use the eTA form, read these instructions carefully.

Instructions to enter your passport information

Passport number

  • Enter the passport number that is at the top of the passport information page (the page with your photo).
  • Most passport numbers are 8 to 11 characters long. If the number you plan to enter is much shorter or longer than this, check that you are using the right number.
  • Passport numbers are made up of a combination of letters and numbers. Be extra careful with the letter O and the number 0, and the letter I and the number 1.
  • Don’t enter any special characters (like a hyphen) or spaces.

Passport country of issue

  • Select the country code that matches the one on the passport information page (page with your photo).
  • To find this code see the field named “Code”, “Issuing country”, or “Authority”.
  • Be careful when you select the code from the list in the application form. Some countries have multiple options and some codes are very similar.

Instructions for French passport holders

Passport number

    • Do not enter the number on the first page of your passport, or the number at the bottom of the page with your photo.
  • Most passport numbers are 9 characters long. If the number you plan to enter is much shorter or longer than this, check that you are using the right number.
  • Passport numbers are made up of a combination of letters and numbers. Be extra careful with the letter O and the number 0, and the letter I and the number 1.
  • Don’t enter any special characters (like a hyphen) or spaces.

How to apply for an eTA if the printed passport expiry date has passed (Venezuelan citizens with a UCI)

United States lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders) who are citizens of Venezuela need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to, or transit through Canada.

If the printed expiry date on your passport has passed, you cannot use our online form to apply for an eTA.

You need to contact us for special instructions to apply for your eTA. When you contact us, it is very important to include your unique client identifier (UCI).

You may wish to open a new browser tab or window while you follow the instructions below:

  1. Go to the IRCC web form.
  2. Under the drop-down “Type of application/enquiry,” select “Electronic Travel Authorization.”
  3. Under the second drop-down “Type of application/enquiry (continued),” select “Case Specific Enquiries.”
  4. Fill in the Web form:
    1. Under the notes field “Your enquiry,” include your preferred correspondence language (English or French).
    2. Fill in all the fields that you can.
  5. Once you complete the form, click “Next.” On the next page, answer “yes” to upload copies of the following documents:
    1. A copy of the biographic page of your Venezuelan passport.
    2. A copy of both sides of your valid USLPR card (Green Card).
    3. If you’re applying for someone else, please upload a copy of the Use of Representative [IMM5476] form.

Your enquiry may be rejected if you don’t upload copies of the documents listed above.

Note: Provisional passports issued by Venezuela are not valid for travel to Canada.

How to apply for an eTA if the printed expiry date has passed (Venezuelan citizens)

  4. Fill in the Web form:
    1. Under the notes field “Your enquiry,” include your preferred correspondence language (English or French).
    2. Fill in all the fields that you can
  5. Once you complete the form, click “Next.” On the next page, answer “Yes” to upload copies of the following documents:
    1. A copy of the biographic page of your Venezuelan passport.
    2. A copy of both sides of your valid USLPR card (Green Card).
    3. If you’re applying for someone else, please upload a copy of the Use of Representative [IMM5476] form.

Your enquiry may be rejected if you don’t upload copies of the documents listed above.

  • You may only find out at the airport if you made a mistake.
  • You’ll have to reapply for an eTA at the airport.
  • Depending on your situation, it may not be possible to get an eTA at the last minute.
