Décoration d’opération de guerre qui est officiellement appelée « La Grande Guerre » et qui est accompagnée des années pertinentes dans le cas des unités dissoutes en Angleterre seulementNote de bas de page 1.
Description
En raison de la politique appliquée par Sam Hughes, ministre de la Milice et de la Défense de 1911 à 1916, le Corps expéditionnaire canadien recrutait un bataillon d’infanterie après l’autre pour l’effort de guerre, sans pour autant s’efforcer de fournir un système de renforts à ces unités une fois qu’elles étaient déployées sur le terrain. On s’attendait à ce que chaque bataillon dispose d’un effectif complet d’environ 1 000 membres du personnel de tous grades avant qu’il ne quitte le Canada pour le Royaume-Uni. Dès l’arrivée en Grande-Bretagne, la plupart des unités étaient dissoutes de sorte que les officiers subalternes ainsi que les caporaux et soldats puissent servir de renforts au front. Ce système lourd et peu économique a été remplacé après la destitution de Hughes, mais il avait fraendré la constitution, dans beaucoup de collectivités un peu partout au pays, de nombreuses unités censées aller elles-mêmes combattre au front. En reconnaissance des efforts et des sacrifices faits par ces unités pour fournir des effectifs aux unités combattantes du Corps expéditionnaire canadien, l’honneur « La Grande Guerre », suivi des années pertinentes, a été attribué. Dans le cas où les unités visées étaient perpétuées par d’autres, l’honneur de bataille serait lui aussi perpétué, mais ne serait pas arboré si l’unité assurant la perpétuation détenait des honneurs de la guerre 1914-1919.
