Special or diplomatic passport (child): How to apply

1. Get the documents ready
You need to include these documents with your child’s application:
- an original copy of your child’s proof of citizenship
- proof of parentage
- proof of legal guardianship, if applicable
- all documents that refer to custody of, mobility of, or access to the child
- 2 identical passport photos.
- On the back of 1 photo:
- there must be a signature from the guarantor, and
- the photographer must write
- the photographer’s name, address and postal code
- the date the photo was taken
- On the back of 1 photo:
- a detailed flight itinerary, if available
- a copy of one of the following documents:
- the signed travel authority and advance form
- the posting confirmation form
- a signed letter from your department
- National Defence or Canadian Armed Forces specific forms
- a completed Visa Facilitation Form (PPTC 639) (PDF, 1.6 MB), if your child needs a visa
You may need extra documents if
- you’re being posted abroad
- your child’s name has changed
- you’re replacing a lost, stolen or damaged passport
- you’re changing the gender identifier on your child’s passport
2. Complete the application form
Remember to
- sign each page
- include the guarantor’s information
- make sure your guarantor signs
- the application form
- the back of 1 of the photos
3. Find out if you need a visa
If you’re travelling to a country that requires a visa, add 3 to 45 business days (depending on the country) to the 15 business days it takes for us to process the passport application. Each country sets its own visa requirements and processing times. We have no influence over the time it takes a foreign mission to issue a visa.
4. Pay the fees
Special or diplomatic passport: $225
Visa: $90 per visa (if required)
If you’re applying to travel on official government business or you’re representing the Government of Canada abroad for
- a federal department or agency, complete and include the
- a Crown corporation or you’re paying with a credit card other than a departmental credit card, complete and include the

If none of the above apply to you, you do not need to complete a billing form. Just submit your application. We’ll let you know if we need anything else from you.
5. Submit your application
You can apply by mail, in-person walk-in or contact us for an in-person appointment.
