L’honneur « cote 70 » a été attribué aux unités qui ont participé à la prise réussie et à la défense de ce point saillant près de Lens, en France, entre le 15 et le 25 août 1917. Au début de juillet, le Corps canadien (lieutenant-général sir A.W. Currie) reçoit l’ordre de s’emparer de la ville de Lens. Currie, le nouveau commandant du Corps, planifie d’abord de prendre le point saillant de la cote 70 qui domine Lens du côté nord. L’attaque, qui devait à l’origine avoir lieu à la fin de juillet, est reportée jusqu’à la mi-août en raison des conditions météorologiques. Cela permet au Corps canadien d’augmenter ses préparatifs en vue de l’opération à venir. Il procède notamment à des raids contre des avant-postes allemands, et des positions d’artillerie allemandes sont détruites tandis que les artilleurs canadiens entreprennent un programme de destruction de barbelés, de contre-batterie et de lancement d’obus à gaz. Les membres du génie préparent aussi des barils de pétrole spéciaux devant être utilisés le matin de l’attaque pour créer un écran de fumée. L’infanterie s’exerce à l’attaque sur un terrain semblable, mais contrairement à ce qui s’était fait lors d’attaques précédentes, il n’y a aucun grand barrage préparatoire, car cela aurait averti l’ennemi de l’imminence de l’opération. Il y a effectivement effet de surprise lorsque l’attaque est déclenchée à 4 h 25 le matin du 15 août, sous le couvert d’un immense barrage d’artillerie. Une simulation d’attaque par la 4e Division (major-général sir D. Watson) devant Lens sert de diversion à l’appui de la 1re (major-général sir A.C. Macdonell) et de la 2e (major-général sir H.E. Burstall) Division, qui réussissent à s’emparer de la cote 70. Ayant prévu les inévitables contre-attaques allemandes, ces formations consolident rapidement leurs gains, et l’artillerie commence à bombarder les zones où l’on sait que les Allemands se regrouperont dans le but de contre-attaquer. Au cours des jours suivants, les Allemands organisent au moins 21 contre-attaques contre les défenseurs canadiens de la cote 70.
Le 18 août, le général Currie prévoit améliorer la position devant Lens, à la limite sud de la cote 70. Le 21 août, une attaque est lancée par la 2e et la 4e Division, appuyées par le regroupement de l’artillerie provenant de trois divisions en plus de l’artillerie lourde du Corps et des canons de la Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. Toutefois, les Allemands ont prévu l’attaque et, malgré le lourd barrage, ils rendent l’avance canadienne difficile. Les attaques continuent sans grand succès pendant les jours suivants, et les opérations se terminent le 25 août. Même si les Canadiens ne se sont pas emparés de Lens, ils ont pris le contrôle de la cote 70, qui domine la ville et qui demeurera aux mains des Alliés jusqu’à la fin de la guerre.
