Description
À la suite de son succès éclatant à Amiens le 8 août 1918, le Corps canadien (lieutenant-général sir A.W. Currie) est renvoyé dans le Nord pour rejoindre la Première Armée (britannique) près d’Arras. Plus tard, à la mi-août, des plans sont dressés en vue d’une attaque dans l’est par la Première Armée, en direction de la ligne Drocourt-Quéant détenue par les Allemands, laquelle constitue un prolongement de la ligne Hindenburg. La 2e (major-général sir H.E. Burstall) et la 3e (major-général L.J. Lipsett) Division canadienne entament leur avance le 26 août en attaquant sur un front de quatre milles entre le village de Neuville Vitasse et la rivière Scarpe. Les Canadiens s’emparent rapidement des villages de Monchy-le-Preux et de Guémappe. Par la suite, les Allemands se replient dans les positions préparées de la ligne Drocourt-Quéant, et les Canadiens poursuivent leur avance en vue d’attaquer la ligne Drocourt-Quéant Line le 30 août 1918.
