Strategic Environmental Assessment
The Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces are committed to ensuring that their activities and operations are conducted in an environmentally sustainable manner. The Defence environmental policy recognizes that the responsible stewardship of the assets with which we are entrusted is not only a moral but also an operational imperative.
In response to the recommendations of the Commissioner of Environment and Sustainable Development, DND has been working towards the integration of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) into internal processes to conform with the requirements of the 2004 Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policy, Plan and Program Proposals.
In 2013-14, Defence will simplify the SEA preliminary scan process for managers and staff who are involved in the preparation of policy, program and plan proposals through the development of an online template. Defence will continue to enable SEA awareness by encouraging the use of the online template, the tracking system and the SEA training module.
