Contexte
Honneur de bataille de groupe englobant la « Bataille d’Havrincourt », la « Bataille d’Épehy », la « Bataille du canal du Nord », la « Bataille du canal de Saint-Quentin », la « Bataille de la ligne Beaurevoir » et la « Bataille de Cambrai, 1918 », qui est officiellement appelé « Les batailles de la ligne Hindenburg » et qui fait lui-même partie de la campagne nommée « La percée de la ligne Hindenburg (26 août — 12 octobre 1918) ».Note de bas de page 1
Description
Les diverses batailles incluses sous l’appellation « Ligne Hindenburg » ont commencé par une offensive britannique le 12 septembre 1918. Cette ligne était la position allemande la plus solidement défendue sur le front occidental, et l’Armée britannique allait devoir faire appel àla majorité des ressources disponibles pour s’en emparer. Le feld-maréchal Haig convainc alors le commandant suprême des Forces alliées, le maréchal Foch, de diriger tous les efforts sur le front occidental contre la ligne Hindenburg, dans le cadre d’offensives concentriques réparties dans le temps à compter du 26 septembre, les Français et les Américains attaquant au sud. Le 27 septembre, la Première et la Troisième Armée britannique (qui comprennent le Corps canadien [lieutenant-général sir A.W. Currie]) attaqueront à partir de l’ouest. Le 28 septembre, le Groupe d’armées des Flandres (qui comprend la Seconde Armée britannique, au sein de laquelle sert le Royal Newfoundland Regiment), placé sous le commandement du roi Albert 1er de Belgique, attaquera à partir du nord. L’assaut de suivi sera mené le 29 septembre par la Quatrième Armée britannique (avec la 3e Division de cavalerie [britannique], qui englobe la Brigade de cavalerie canadienne [brigadier-général R.W. Paterson]) et les Premières Armées françaises arrivant du sud-ouest.
Pour sa part, le Corps canadien a effectué un franchissement d’assaut sur le canal du Nord et a progressé vers la ville de Cambrai, le 9 octobre 1918.
