Honneur de groupe intégrant la « Bataille d’Albert, 1916 », la « Bataille de la crête de Bazentin », la « Bataille du bois Delville », la « Bataille de la crête de Pozières », la « Bataille de Guillemont », la « Bataille de Ginchy », la « Battle de Flers-Courcelette », la « Bataille de la crête de Thiepval », la « Bataille des crêtes du Transloy », la « Bataille des Hauts de l’Ancre », et la « Bataille de l’Ancre, 1916 », qui est officiellement appelé « Les batailles de la Somme, 1916 » et qui fait lui-même partie des « Opérations sur la Somme (1er juillet - 18 novembre 1916) »Note de bas de page 1.
Description
L’honneur « Somme, 1916 » a été attribué à l’ensemble des unités ayant participé à toute la série de batailles qui ont fait partie des offensives britanniques sur la Somme entre le 1er juillet et le 18 novembre 1916. Censée être une vaste offensive visant à percer les lignes allemandes de part et d’autre de la Somme, cette attaque conjointe des Français et des Britanniques débute le 1er juillet 1916. Comme le but visé ce jour-là n’est jamais atteint, on continue de planifier une série d’autres attaques d’envergures diverses afin de percer les lignes allemandes. On regagne graduellement du terrain au prix de lourdes pertes, mais la percée souhaitée ne se concrétise jamais en presque six mois de combat. Le Royal Newfoundland Regiment est la première unité des Forces armées canadiennes d’aujourd’hui à prendre part à l’offensive sur la Somme le 1er juillet. Il combattra de nouveau à cet endroit plus tard, en octobre 1916. Les unités de la Brigade de cavalerie canadienne (brigadier-général J.E.B. Seely) ont participé au combat en juillet 1916. Le Corps canadien (lieutenant-général sir J.H.G. Byng) se joint au combat sur la Somme à la fin d’août. Quant à la 4e Division canadienne (major-général sir D. Watson) nouvellement formée, qui ne fait pas encore partie du Corps canadien, elle arrive sur les lieux en octobre.
