Reserve Transition Support
Reserve Transition Support (RTS) is a policy administered by the Canadian Armed Forces Transition Group (CAF TG). The RTS policy may provide a period of Class "B" Reserve Service of up to three years to you as an eligible member of the Reserve Force, who:
- is ill or injured during full-time Reserve Service greater than six months; and
- has medical circumstances and an anticipated recovery that restrict your full-time employment for a minimum of six months.
With this support, the CAF intends to facilitate your return to duty or transition from military to civilian life.
The Commander of CAF TG, or their delegate, is the approving authority for RTS requests and the related attached posting of eligible members to CAF TG. If CAF TG approves your request for RTS, they will offer you an initial 1-year period of Class “B” Reserve Service, which can be extended up to a maximum of 3 years.
The Reserve Service during which your illness or injury occurred may need to be stopped early for the RTS attached posting to begin.
More information is available in:

Eligibility
To be eligible for RTS, you must meet the requirements set out in CAFMPI 06/25 articles 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8. Eligibility factors include:
- not being in receipt of Reserve Force – Compensation during a period of injury, disease or illness (RFC), (RFC) benefits or an income replacement under the Government Employees Compensation Act (GECA);
- your Reserve Force sub-component;
- your class of Reserve Service;
- being on a period of more than 180 days of uninterrupted full-time Reserve Service (without breaks in service) at the time of illness or injury;
- the medical employment limitations (MELs) assigned to you while on that period of Reserve Service;
- having a prognosis and circumstances that would restrict your assigned duties and full-time employment for a minimum of six months;
Note:
- Members from the Supplementary Reserve and Primary Reserve on Class “A” Reserve Service are not eligible for Reserve Transition Support.
- Members may be eligible for RTS with illnesses or injuries that are not attributable to service.
- Reservists in the Cadet Organizations Administration and Training Service (COATS) and Canadian Rangers may be eligible for RTS if they meet the CAFMPI requirements.
-
Advantages to RTS
- Your dependants’ Public Service Health Care plan (PSHCP) and Reserve Dental Care Plan (RDCP) coverage can continue without interruption.
- With an attached posting to a Transition Unit (TU), you can expect the level of support offered by CAF Transition Centres (CAF TC).
- You may also be eligible for the following programs and services:
- access to medical treatment and/or rehabilitation;
- service benefits for ill or injured members;
- Return to Duty program (RTD);
- Complex Transition Support (CTS);
- CAF Long Term Disability (CAF LTD) Vocational Rehabilitation program; and
- Vocational Rehabilitation Program for Serving Members (VRPSM)
Your parent unit Commanding Officer (CO) must initiate your RTS request using DND Form 4452 - Request for Reserve Transition Support (RTS) and/or Attached Posting to the Canadian Armed Forces Transition Group (CAF TG) - (Reserve Force Supported Members) (available only on the Defence Network). This may be prompted by your Base/Wing Surgeon’s (B/W Surg) recommendation. Refer to CAFMPI 06/25 article 5.1 - Requests for RTS.
If you are located far from a Transition Centre, remaining in the position at your home unit’s location may be a better option than an attached posting to CAF TG. In cases like this, the parent unit CO may submit the request for RTS indicating they will keep you within your organization rather than attach posting you to CAF TG. Your chain of command remains your Managing Authority (MA), while CAF TG provides remote support to you and your chain of command. Refer to CAFMPI 06/25 article 4.2.
To make an informed decision about your eligibility for RTS and other support options, ask your nearest CAF Transition Centre Services Coordinator.
If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your request for RTS, you can submit a grievance to formally address the decision.
