Description
- L’initiative principale de l’offensive allemande du printemps consiste en une attaque dans les régions de la Picardie et de la Somme contre la Cinquième Armée britannique. Bien que le Corps canadien (lieutenant-général sir A.W. Currie), dans le secteur de la Première Armée, ne participe pas à l’attaque initiale, plusieurs régiments de cavalerie et de mitrailleuses canadiens prennent part au combat. Leur rôle est d’aider à empêcher une percée allemande. Les batteries de cavalerie et de mitrailleuses motorisées peuvent être déplacées rapidement pour combler les trous au besoin ou pour couvrir le retrait de l’infanterie.
- Au cours de cette partie de l’offensive, la 2e et la 3e Division canadienne (major-général sir H.E. Burstall et major-général L.J. Lipsett) participent à l’assaut à l’est d’Arras, de part et d’autre de la route d’Arras-Cambrai. Dans les trois premiers jours de combat sur un terrain difficile en présence de défenses allemandes bien préparées, les deux divisions canadiennes avancent de cinq milles et, au 28 août, elles se sont emparées du système de défense allemand de Fresnes-Rouvroy. Cette position étant désormais aux mains des Canadiens, le Corps canadien commence à planifier l’étape suilipsettoit l’assaut contre la ligne Drocourt-Quéant. Afin de préparer l’attaque contre cette redoutable position, l’artillerie organise des barrages anti-barbelés, les membres du génie construisent des ponts pour traverser le canal du Nord, et un certain nombre d’opérations mineures sont menées pour améliorer les lignes de départ. On déploie aussi d’importants efforts derrière la ligne pour réparer et prolonger les routes ainsi qu’allonger la voie ferrée pour trafic léger afin de déplacer des fournitures très nécessaires. L’attaque contre la position allemande débute le 2 septembre. La plupart des objectifs canadiens sont saisis ce jour-là et, élément le plus important, la ligne Drocourt-Quéant a été envahie sur une largeur d’environ 1 600 mètres. À la fin de la journée du 2 septembre, les ordres canadiens sont de poursuivre l’offensive le 3, mais les Allemands se retirent pendant la nuit jusqu’à des positions à l’est du canal du Nord. Au cours de cette deuxième étape, le Corps canadien a progressé de cinq milles de plus et s’est emparé de toutes les positions allemandes, à l’ouest du canal du Nord. Entre le 26 août et le 4 septembre, il a avancé de plus de 10 milles et a saisi l’une des positions de défense allemandes les plus fortifiées sur le front occidental.
